Penny Annie When Annie was eighteen years old And it was time to leave the fold, A farmer on a place nearby, Requested that she come and try Completely cleaning his large house, Attempting to appease his spouse. She was invalided, so, She'd watched three housemaids come and go And said she'd not be satisfied, Until somebody showed great pride In working on the job at hand Until the house looked simply grand! So Annie went and did her best, She left no corners undone, lest, She'd miss a spot and eyes might see Her work at less than it should be. When she was done, she puzzled o'er The pennies found above each door. Eighteen in all and shiny new, There was no question what to do. She took them to the mistress and Poured them all in a slender hand. The lady smiled and gave her praise, For all her good housekeeping ways And told her that she'd laid a snare, To find the one who'd take most care. Then Annie got the job that day. She packed her bags and went to stay. A year went by and suddenly, The oldest son decided he, Must have Miss Annie for his wife, To be with him through all his life. His mother clapped her hands in glee, When Annie became family! |
