memory

How the West was won?           I take it personally. The deceit, attempted genocide, Manifest Destiny used to fuel the fires, the land rushes that took away my people's homes...           I take it personally, paperwork that forced ownership of pieces of the reservations so they could be bought, sold, swindled from the natives, the gold that was more important than the people who lived upon it, the herds of buffalo left skinless to die, the traditional ways of life that died with them...           I take it personally, these here United States that stepped upon my people, hoping to eraticate us like insects, flooding us like water, choking us like drought. And now you ask me to pledge allegiance to the flag? You ask me to put my hand over my heart? You ask me to fight for this country? Perhaps you do not have much of a memory           but I still have mine.
