VILLANELLE: MEETING IN MEMORY

The once uncertain future’s turned to past, But it can be reborn from memory’s womb, And that is how we meet again at last. The moments of our lives go tumbling fast, And when we finally tumble to the tomb, The once uncertain future’s turned to past. Let this be all the treasure I’ve amassed: Days, months, and years—enough to fill a room. And that is where we meet again at last. Now that you’ve been frozen by time’s blast Before your tender growth could reach its bloom, The once uncertain future’s turned to past. Although the gulf between us stretches vast, My recollection half revokes your doom; And that is how we meet again at last. Our lives are only patterns that are cast In tapestry that’s woven on God’s loom: The once uncertain future’s turned to past, And that is where we meet again at last.
