Tarnished Tinsel

"They have not chosen me," He said, "But I have chosen them!" Brave--brokenhearted statement--uttered in Bethlehem!    Emily Dickinson Darkness descending, a streetlight faintly glows in dim, dusk light. Sitting alone, I watch the Christmas tree lights twinkle merrily;  tinsel reflecting them, like tiny stars dancing in shadows of the room. Past flowing behind, the present stands still, as I dreamily ponder; memories parading, like clips of old movies, playing again in my mind. Eyes staring, through a window of bright decorations, into a distance... heart wandering...beyond the streetlight into an uncertain future. Another year passing, I feel the hands of time reaching out for me. Not old, not young, I stand in the middle of my life's play; feet walking in familiar shoes, comfortable but now worn by use. As failure seems to be my feast, my frailty becomes first priority. Dreams fading, filled with fate's holes, seem so unreachable... Sands of time flowing, faster it seems than my heart can travel. My mind asks...Where have I been?  What have I accomplished?  Tree lights twinkling, seem to fade to a faint glimmer. Is it just my imagination, or is the tinsel a bit tarnished?  Are the colors of red, green, and gold not dazzling as usual? Hearing a familiar melody, my mind returns to the present. "Oh, little town of Bethlehem..." my life was born in you... Tinsel of Christmas fading from my view, I see a brighter Light! His Presence seems far away, born in that little town so long ago; yet that same Jesus is here, a holy enity...living within me. Remembering His words, "I will send you a comforter," restores hope;  as peace floods my spirit, gently removing the tarnish of failure. Stripping away the film of false pride and the tinges of regret, He reminds me of my real treasure...gifts, never fading with time... loving deeds, given to enrich the lives of others, often unnoticed; my gifts of grace...a kind word, a prayer of faith, a hand of hope... returning their joy, multiplied by God, to heal my own heart. Seeing a fresh future filled with hope, His Spirit goes before me;  Seeing what I can become in Him, He leaves me the 'gift of faith.' Losing my will to His Touch, I reach up to discover His Dreams... His Destiny for my life, held carefully in the Hand of my Father; waiting for my discovery...the hidden jewels of my future beckon.
