Welcome To Hell ( Romeo & Juliet )

Welcome To Hell! Two lovers decide to leave this hell, A war torn city with a rancid smell. Bullets and shells, rain in day and night, Once a beautiful city, now a terrible sight. The morons surround, and lay siege to the town, The civilized world leaves the people to drown. Extremists rule now, they ethnically clean, Their intentions and actions are worse than obscene. Drug crazed soldiers with alcohol breath, Pointing their weapons and spewing out death. Insanity rules in this god-awful place, Divisions of peoples, divisions of race. On paper the lovers are on opposite sides, Their sense and their sanity of course overrides. It's these two that offer a glimmer of hope, And that's why they're leaving, they're going to elope. Their religion, their race, their colour, their hair, They're in love with each other. About that they care. They arrange to meet at a place after dark, Near the cities new cemetery, that once was a park. One leaves from the Eastside and one from the west, They will soon be together and then they can rest. Quiet and careful and riddled with fear, There's no looking back now, no time for a tear. They emerge from the darkness from opposite sides, Their elation at seeing each other, they cannot hide. They're running to each other over a ridge, They will at last be together when they reach the bridge. But...A sickening crackle shatters the night, The snipers have seen them and ended their plight. They fall to the ground gasping for life, They will never become husband and wife. In their last moments of life, they reach through the sand, Desperately trying, to reach each other's hand. They die on the bridge in the cold where they fell, A sign nearby says, "Welcome to Hell."

Additional Notes:
I wrote this about 2 years ago, it is based around a true story I saw on the new in the 90's. Recently I read on the internet a sad news article about a journalist who died somewhere, I think he worked for Associated Press or Rueters, But who had followed the story of "Romeo and Juliet" and had been affected by it during his life. My poem is about the same two people.
