Cave Paintings

I wonder how it was to be   A person of antiquity,   Who clothed themselves in skins and found   Dim caves to live in all year round   And did they on some winter night,   Illumined by the firelight,   Start painting on their walls of stone,   With charcoal and some bits of bone?   Their handprints, for the years to find,   And leave a history behind   Of all the animals and birds   They there recorded without words.   And did they ever dream when they   Were painting pictures, that someday,   People would travel far to see   All this marvelous imagery?   These haunting relics of the past,   So crudely made, were meant to last!
