Reflections

He awakens on this day, this special day of reunion, with special friends. He travels to the town park, where a great monument glistens in the bright morning sun. He places his upon this stone, and touches his best friend's hand. A sudden burst of flames travels through him. Gunfire surrounds his silhouette. Bombs are dropping all around. He starts to cry. A chopper hovers above. Screams are heard for miles. His high school buddy falls, as does his salty tear upon the barren ground. His hand starts to shake as his mind travels between worlds. Between the beautiful day and himself, and between the flames and gunfire, and his best friend. A giant mushroom cloud of Death rocks the world. His hand falls, as does a last tear. A trumpet sounds, his friends go back, he says goodbye. His friends slepp once more, until again he comes to visit them, and places his hand on the stone, for old time's sake.

Additional Notes:
I wrote this poem after seeing a painting in a veteran's magazine of the Vietnam Memorial. The painting was done by Lee Teter. This combined with my own artwork was used for a Memorial Day event at my high school. I use the word stone in reference to the monument to evoke the cold, emptiness that those who lived through this sad time would have felt and especially for those of you that unfortunately still feel that way. This poem is in honor of all veterans of all wars, and to the memory of those who never came home. You will not be forgotten. We live free today because of the brave faces in the reflection of the "Wall".
