The Nightbirds

They wait, high in the trees hooting softly as the branches sway in the breeze all-nighters, bearing secret witness to every crime committed through the dark hours of time. Something shuffles beneath the leaves: the bird's eyes flutter open to see and he leaps to take wing ready to attack, not to sing. Sharp talons penetrate the victim's skin as a knife in hearts of men. Holding tight and soaring high, the nightbird conquers in the sky. Stopping now only to feast on this small, unfortunate beast. Warm blood spurting and splattering; somewhere a partridge is chattering. The nightbird turns to watch a man below groaning, tugging, now digging a hole. Another man lies on the moss quite still: another nightbird has made a kill.
