Do You Sleep?

You only wanted her to sleep, my friends' daughter, her seven-year-old body stuffed under your floorboards, not dreaming. Did you think that dark, dank place a suitable spot for a grave? Tell me, did you feel her terror as you choked the life from her? Legs kicking, tiny hands clawing at your fingers, desperate to escape the crushing grip around her throat. They said there were signs if we knew how to read them. As if  we should have known the killer who made your body its' home, and  I only want to know: Do you sleep?
