The Week Before

Twas the week before summer and all through the schools, Not many a child followed the rules. . . Lost papers were stashed in their desks with great care, In hopes that the teachers would not see them in there! The students were no longer eager to know, All the knowledge and wisdom we had to bestow! With impatience they listened as the last books were read, While visions of freedom danced around in their heads. But the teachers persevered 'till the sound of the last bell, While discussing among them who'd pass and who'd fail. When what before their cluttered desks  should appear, But that well-deserved paycheck to bring some comfort and cheer! But then the last day came. Alas, it was true. The long school year was finally through. As the teachers dashed to their cars you could hear their voices ring out with cheer. . .      "I know we'll have a great summer,       but heaven help us next year!"
