Last Night

Tonight we lay both on our sides your arms surround me shielding me from the possible unknown terrors that can make their way into our dark home You sleep peacefully breathing in...then out sounding like soothing waves on a calm warm summer's day bringing themselves in...and out without harsh pounding power I count your breaths one.. then two...then three... My mind slowly shuts out the stressors of the passing day. Your arms around me slightly tighten and you twitch your toes. Perhaps you are dreaming of us running away... through fields filled with pastel red, blue, yellow and violet wild flowers hand in hand to a place where those who do not understand our love will not judge but  accept You running in-front guiding me slowing down, approaching an ancient oak tree huge green leaves above us shimmering with dancing summer sunlight A picnic below. Your deceased loving grandmother is there... sitting on a red and white checked blanket as is mine and my departed grandfathers with out stretched arms they reach for us You do not drop my hand We both outstretch our free ones to those we both have longed for so long to touch. Fingers extend to fingers not touching moving closer...closer... "It's a beautiful sunny day!" the alarm clock screeches. You release me and hit the snooze bar. A silent tear rolls down my cheek.
