"In a New York Delicatessen"
Downtown New York. Inconsistent snowfall matching the cocophony of humming traffic and busy streets. Traffic lights and pedestrians all falling victim to yet another day. Inside, it's warm. You sit in a corner booth and breathe the moist air. The atmosphere like a crescendo waiting to orgasm into dead space filling it with life. The people working at the counter like ants running rampant taking orders. Chaotic one track minds like trains in a tunnel set on course by this mosh pit of consumerism. You just sit there reading the times. See the woman in the corner with the red jacket? Later on today, she'll close the business deal. (little does she know) The man at the counter with the cane? His father is in the hospital. (little does he know) The elderly man at the door with his wife? His daughter is getting married to an ex-convict in two months. (little do they know) - (little does she know) The heavy-set woman working at the counter rolling the dough with expertise? She inconsistently wipes her forehead with her wrist. Her nephew graduates from college in a few hours. (little does she know - she doesn't know him anymore) So much going on in life and no one knows just how much. But time is of the essence, right? Hurry up and wait. Hurry up and get through this. You just sit there listening for a minute to the buzz of the neon sign behind you. This buzz massaging you thoughts, reshaping your life for the moment as this section of life hurls itself at you full force, colliding with your reality. (your sexuality) And for a split second, you shallowly realize that sexuality IS infact descrimination. But spare that one thought and notice the short curmudgeonly looking woman exiting the bathroom staring directly at you. (little did you know) This woman is hungry for life. Now pay attention to the feeling in the air. That is knowledge. That is exhistence of chaos in refinement. The atmosphere is brilliant with colour and almost ethereal. Steam rising from coffee pots, running water, different conversations colliding with each other in mid air to gracefully dance for a few seconds. Foreign languages showing presence and simple/complex thoughts set afloat in the vast oceans of mindsets tided by different personalities. You step off of this temporary plateau of enlightenment and focus to the deli again. You finish your mid-morning coffee break and smile on your egress from the quiet warmth to the cold of the pulsating city. Just another day...
