Mother

Mother This is the name I call you The identity that I pin on your lapel The word I learned to associate with you To me, you are my mother I do not know what your desires, dreams, discoveries, Struggles, hardships or consequences were Before you gave birth to your title I did not see your laughter, pain, challenges or accomplishments I did not feel your resolute or indecision I know nothing of who you were outside of history’s telling I know only of you as my Mother In my youth’s eye. There was no question Or hesitation in thought of what your purpose was It seemed as natural for you to perform As giving birth to me had been And not thinking otherwise I slipped on the shoe of being your daughter Now I am older with children of my own I know what I am at this point of my life And who I was in the years proceeding this era Taking some of the old to give strength to the new Is instinctive for me, as it must have been for you And I wonder sometimes, Mother Who you used to be Do you remember you r desires you used to dream about? Did you make any strides towards achieving them? Are you able to beckon the feelings towards life That you left by the wayside of the road you used to travel? Before the responsibilities, Before the ground rules changed Before your life changed I will always know you as my mother You rightfully earned the bestowed name And in recognizing what you gave to become that person Makes me realize what pride can be found In calling you the name I have always known you as In calling you my Mother
