REMNANTS

Here we sit in opposite chairs, Me upstairs and him downstairs, Married over fifty years, you see, Just remnants of what we used to be. He reads the newspaper or watches TV, I write, I read, I'm on the PC, Remnants, sometimes more splendid Than what we used to be. He sleeps in a different room and bed, At our age, "Who cares," is all that's said. We still enjoy the scenery Though remnants of what we used to be. He boils potatoes on the stove, Forgets to turn them off, When I return home after I rove, Burnt spuds, pan and smoke to cough! He says that he still loves me And I am still his 'girl,' When did we become fragments, When did our romance unfurl? Age snuck up slowly upon us, Like a stalker, without creating fuss, Suddenly the glitter of stars in our eyes Became cataracts, floaters, particles on the rise. Aren't there any odds and ends, Scraps that still remain? Yes, bits and pieces of affection -- I guess we can't complain. The surplus has become leftovers, We are lucky to still be here, He may repeat things over and over, But both our minds are clear. We share some of the housework, He claims he does it all, We're fortunate we're still around  To hear each other's call. So many years together, So many storms yet to weather, Better that than someone exclaim, "Remnants have become remains." For we would miss each other, The security of what we share, From passion to compassionate, Instead of loneliness to bear.
