Bloody Roses Oh sweet valentine! When will your heart be mine? With one taste of liquid fire We are ever tainted by desire. As love is rarely given blindly, All I ask is kill me kindly. I’ll always remember the day You stole my heart away; Your unexpected call, Sending flowers after all. Now you’ll never be alone. Forever Moran to your Capone. |
Additional Notes:
This is a bit of a twist to the traditional valentine.. or maybe I should just say it is a little bit twisted. Many references in the poem relate to the story of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and the story of Bugs Moran and Al Capone, who were both mob rivals in Chicago during Prohibition. Capone was quoted to have said, “I’m gonna send Moran a valentine he will never forget. The story of the massacre is one of passion and hate, and of two people who’s names are forever entwined.
*liquid fire = refers to the flow of alcohol they both battled to control and profit from.
*kill me kindly = Capone believed in the custom “hospitality before execution”.
*Bloody Roses/sending flowers = Prior to the massacre it was rumored that Capone was
told by an associate that he would have to kill a lot of people to get to Moran and
in answer to that he simply replied, “I’ll send flowers”.
