Last Arizona gig!

It was daybreak down in Phoenix when I got in from the Coast;      My buddy'd booked this one-night gig at a Javelina Roast. I wanted Babs to come along, but she copped her monthly-state:      She liked to set my sound and sync...and try to keep me straight. I made it this time right on through - just one quick stop for beer.      By Goodyear there was mountin' stress, to pass some 'ever-clear'. The next off-ramp showed "Gas and Eats", and I dropped down to third.      The Mountie dozin' near the top - clear missed my flying-bird. I parked her in Full-Service and went streaking to the head.      A college-type put down his book, to gas my tired 'vette. When I came out all light and fresh, I tossed the kid my keys      And said: "move it if you have to"....and I headed for the "Eats". The place like Hubbard's cupboard, was empty as a tomb.      I grabbed a stool; pulled a smoke; and looked around the room. A voice out of nowhere says "how 'bout a coffee man?"      I said "yeah sure" to all the walls - just as she flushed the can. I watched her as she turned the bend and headed down my way.      Her smile warmer with each step - just like the rays of day. A spark danced 'round her hazel eyes - and this at five a.m.;      I lay my shades upon the bar and scoped this perfect "10". The morning sun played highlight-games, about her raven hair.      She poured two coffees to the rim - our eyes both locked in stare. She raised her cup as I raised mine - the oddest sort of toast:      A pretty smile; a subtle wink; She had it! That's no boast! About that time the cook comes in and fires up the grill.      I hear a "Mornin' Kerri" - and I'm thinking..."Kerri-Phil." Our gaze is finally torn apart, as she greets the daily fare.      Although I need to catch some Z's - I really couldn't care. I watch her all that morning, and she lets her pleasure show.      I can't decide what I like best: her walking "to" or "fro". I think her voice is angel-like, and to each word I hark;      My eyes explore and map her shell - like Lewis an' like Clark. Then I do this private pig-roast in some mucky-muck's back yard.      'Bout a hundred yuppies there, and they're all sucking hard. I'm just playing my acoustic - with one speaker and a mike;      Surrounded by young X'er-wives but none...are Kerri-like. The uppers keep me going and if Jack'll bring me down      I still might catch a little sleep, before I split this town. But my mind goes back to coffee - and back to yester'dawn;      I crank the 'vette, grab two more pills - and toss 'em through a yawn. It's five-ish and I'm on the stoop - a'pickin' my guitar.      I see this blond come driving up, in a faded beater-car. Now she's fussing with her apron. Now she's walkin' toward the door;      "Where is Kerri?" I start shoutin', and my eyes are glazed with gore. The blond chick then rushes past me, and locks the door behind.      I'm tappin' on the windowpane, and screaming that "It's Five!" Just then the cook comes drivin' up and I run out to him:      "Hey where's Kerri?" I demand, and "when's she coming in?" "Yeah Kerri; what a beauty. I'm afraid you're outta luck.      She left right after you did son - just hitched out on a truck. She did say that if I see ya', to say goodbye for her;      She had a somethin' yet t'do...an' was cryin' through her words."      That was back in ninety-eight, and I'm still here today.      Cookie lets me mop the floors...but just for food - no pay.      I sold the Fender and the 'vette - along with all my gear.      I kept the ol' acoustic - 'cause I still trade songs for beer.      Sometimes when I get real drunk, I cop a mood that's scary!      The guys down at the Mission laugh: They call me "Hairy-Kerri."      One o' these days I'm shapin' up; and I'll comb my hair and shave.      I 'know' that Kerri's coming back...and that'll be the day!
