"BEHOLDEN"

I had become again a puppet Whose strings were all unstrung; A lifeless, wooden muppet Whose songs were all unsung. I knew I had been cast away And there was little chance Some playful fingers would one day Help me once again to dance. But, as fate is often kind To those who nurture hope, It sent me fingers to unwind My strings and pull my rope. Once I was lifted off the ground The motion set me free. My lips made lovely music sounds And my heels flew high in glee. I sang and danced so recklessly And time sped by so fast, When suddenly the fingers left me And I knew my dancing days were past. Motionless, I lie here now But my heart feels no despair, For I can hear my music Lifting spirits everywhere.           10-1-'81
