To a Queen to Be

A common hamlet is our town; A village having no renown- Just humble folk, who till the fields nearby. Yet on this road, an hour's ride,  The king and all his court abide. We see them passing by from time to time. How strange that fate should let me see This vast parade of royalty,  A lowly plowman working by the way.  Yet knights and princes come and go, And statesmen hurry to and fro.  I even see the king from day to day. He has a daughter, young and fair, With emerald eyes and golden hair.  His only child, someday she'll take his place. She used to pass here everyday; I watched her grow along the way, From blossom child to high and stately grace. And as I watched, my love began- First as a boy; then as a man. I, too, grew up along this thoroughfare. At times she'd slow her coach's pace, As if to let me glimpse her face. One day she even stopped and watched me there. I think there was a time when she, In innocence and gaiety, Had marveled at this tiller by the road; She must have harbored some desire. And I, in yearning, burned with fire; With pangs of love I longed for her to know. But as she grew, the suitors came, The men of favor, rank, and name. She came no longer daily on the way. For hers was higher destiny:  To come to reign, and not to me. I see that now this sad, but wiser, day. And I wonder how it might have been,  If bonds of circumstance could bend,  And I could speak this love I've never shown. If I could vent this sorrowed heart, And find that we should never part, Could life surpass the feelings I have known? Here's wisdom only pain can teach: In loving someone out of reach, Like flowing tides, life's fullest passions rise. And now, in lieu of bitterness,  I would that I could tell her this: It is enough, my Queen, that you passed by.
