Shadow On My Soul There was a couple that I knew, Who fell in love. Their dream came true. A lovely wedding in the spring. A country home that used to bring Great happiness to them and all The many friends who came to call. Their lives seemed perfect. Before long, The world intruded. Things went wrong. He went off to fight a war. She, in silent suffering, bore The lack of letters. Finally, She moved back home where she could be More useful, in such varied ways And ease her mothers ailing days. The years went by. He never came. She used to sit and write his name, Like prayers, upon a tablet page, Or pace the floor in grief and rage. What happened to him, we don't know. His disappearance brought such woe. She grew so pale and thin that we Lost track of who she used to be And when she called me up to say That she was moving far away, I wanted desperately to find Some words to make her change her mind, But knew our friendship couldn't fill The emptiness she battled still. Her going left me less than whole And cast a shadow on my soul. |
