SEEKING

Seeking salvation I trimmed my nails,  Donated clothes to the homeless in big, black garbage bags, And drank a latte in the park. I felt lighter, strolling through the noonday crowd Until I saw my designer sweater on a young black boy With hunger in his eyes. Perhaps salvation is further away than the Market Street Mission. Seeking perfection I read religious and profane epistles on secret doctrines, Wrestling with grand philosophical questions, like-- How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? The answer, of course, is two--Fred and Ginger. But not until long after they had both  Tapped their way down to Rio, and returned. Can Arthur Murray help me to find God? And if I spin round and round like a Sufi Can I visit a multiplicity of universes? Seeking epiphany I explored brain food and Harry Bucke Who personally experienced Cosmic Consciousness And claimed that Walt Whitman had too. Later, I communed with electric blades of grass, On starry nights, waiting for the White Fire of Oneness, (Or at the very least, one big jolt!) But no fire came, and no one whispered wisdom in my ear Not even the Ghost of Don Juan. Seeking illumination I danced naked at midnight in a misty grove And drew down the moon. Surprisingly  he came when I called And we ate a few cherries, and drank a little sweet Vermouth. "See, no big mystery left," the moon told me. "No need to run about in the buff and catch your death. "The truth is, life is just a bowl of cherries." And I realized for the first time How much the moon And I, Have in common.
