Pilgrimage

I come as a pilgrim, City-bred. Feet acclimated to concrete. Senses deadened by the mid-day din In a million metropolises, No longer hearing the subway's screech. I have eyes blinded by smog, Lungs poisoned by gases Spit from ten million tail pipes, From a thousand smokestacks. So my journey begins. I tread timidly among wild places, Seeking life out in fertile darkness. In a dense forest I stand, As a tree stands-- Still and long. My feet root in fertile soil, While small brown birds Nest in my hair. I am silent As a sequoia is silent. I breath with the earth, In and out, Waiting quietly. My breath becomes showers of diamonds Falling on moss far below. At last, the wind speaks to me, Words heard in the heart, where sound is forbidden. I learn the secret of the firefly, I pay tribute to the sun, and the stars. I sing the song of the Great Mother, And honor the mystery of creation. I make elemental magic in a sacred grove, Calling on earth, air, fire, and water. I behold the greatest mystery, Standing in a circle of light. I am the heirophant, I am the Goddess, I am woman. Come, let me breath new life into you.
