A New Horizon

The Old Souls, at one with the Sea, Had daily washed the Earth's debris For eons...in, through them, then out, Their faith had ebbed and flowed in doubt. Earth's filthmongers, who lacked all respect, Had ravaged their home with abuse and neglect. And of late their endless deluges of litter Had left Earth's caretakers without hope and bitter. Through holes in the skies  Sun's rays scorched Earth's eyes. Climates changed, and the life-giving rain Turned into down-pouring sulfurous pain. The time had come, and Earth held its breath For restoration of faith in Life amidst Death. The Old Souls witnessed a burning and cleaning That gave to God's name a wondrous new meaning.

Additional Notes:
written 10-25-88 --tried to revise it, but left it as it was--things haven't changed for the better in past
years (at least as far as the environment).
