GOLDEN RULE

Lord, something bothers me, and does you too,   perhaps you let the world lose sight of you. As a young man and still attending school,   I recall learning lessons by the Golden Rule. The rule of custom in those bygone days,   we crossed our hearts as we stood to praise. Raising the flag above the blackboard ledge,   in reverent allegiance, we said a pledge. As each and everyone of us, still stood there,   bowed our heads as the teacher led a prayer. Many men have suffered, so many of them died,   for the right to fly our flag, as many widows cried. Maybe those habits may not seem so thrilling,   but recall no classroom shooting or playground killing. As casualties climb and a mounting number rules;   valued flags and prayer are needed back in our schools.

Additional Notes:
This poem was written on the eve of my birthday last year, April 18 following a televison documentary on April 19 being such a tragic day in American history, citing Waco and the Oklahoma bombing. The documentary also included other such tragic events such as all the school shootings. This poem was not written to step on anyone's toes or to interfer with their religious belief, but only as my opinion of some of America's values being lost. This poem was published last summer in Pieces of the Heart ISBN1-58235-545-2.
