THE CLOWN

a painted smile upon his face, with eyes that glimmer and shine. a big red nose and shoes too big, he makes the circus devine. suspenders keep his spotted pants, pulled up into place. but i can't help but wonder, about that smile upon his face. he makes the children laugh out loud, with his magic tricks and such. seems to stop the bucking bronco, with a tough but tender touch. he dances around the crowd, handing out ballons and treats. what a sight he is indeed, with hes painted face and big red feet. laughter seems to follow him, with his wide yet painted grin. but after the tent comes down at night, i wonder who's laughing then. for somehow i find myself loooking, behind the faces much painted the same. i don't see laughter or magic, yet lonliness and pain. it's true they bring us happiness, and lift our spirits if we feel down. still i can't help but wonder, about the man behind the clown.
