Ode to Rock and Water

Be a Rock I will be Water Be the hot molten lava spewing  forth from the volcano and flow to the ocean I will cool your crystals and shards  and settle you to a resting place Be a cliff face I will crash my waves upon you  and take pieces of you to the beaches. You will be crystalline sand Be a rock in a river-bed I will flow over you  and smooth your sharp edges Fall into my still pools  and I will ripple your messages out  until they return When you are cool  grey  and silent Listen  as I sing,  shimmer  and dance Tumble in the stone polisher's jar  I will cushion the blows  from the other stones Be an island of  coral,  granite and basalt I will nourish you  with gentle rain Be the tiny stones holding  tender roots in their place I will penetrate the earth to feed them Be a secret place  and I will cloak you  in my fog and mist I cannot be a rock but  I will be ice  to hold secrets of my own,  Will you forgive me? When you have become dust and ash  and fly into the atmosphere, my rain droplets will surround you and bring you back to earth. Be a Rock and I will be Water ..................
