"A Woman At The Party"

I was posturing ever so innocently At a party given recently. The kind that is given to impress, An excuse to fawn and overdress. The kind where rings and gold chains shine.. Conversations about what's yours or mine.. Where prejudice hides quite decently Amidst hors d'oeuvres, champagne, and wine. This party was literally wallowing In angst so bitter that swallowing The full lip-service given deafened ears Had become a game, "charade of tears." I was about to take leave of this gloom When a late-comer suddenly entered the room. A woman with "persona mysterious" allowing The light back into this chamber of doom. What well hidden secret so disarming Made her honest, simple smile so charming? Her lack of jewels and simple gown Put all the phony glitter down. I tried to cross the room to meet her, But so many moved across to greet her. All frozen follies now thawing and warming, As seeds of sincerity were now being sown.
