FINAL MISSION Hueys circle round the firefight, to evacuate our wounded squad. 'Oh where in hell are You now, You promised to be with us God?' I feel the blood run down my back, from a live round that hit my chest. Air I breathe escapes my lungs and leaks through my blood-soaked vest. My lips are dry, my tounge so thick, I spitout bloodclots as I speak. 'Sarge, take this letter from my pocket, I feel myself getting mighty weak.' I think my right leg's shattered, my foot now lays way over there. My weary eyelids getting heavy, and my lungs can't hold much air. Goddamn you Uncle Sam, you promised that I'd outshine the rest. You said, Of those to serve your country, I would serve you the best. I think of home, my friends, a family left behind, where I wanted to return. Now I feel but numbness, I don't even feel the bullet fragments burn. Sergeant, get out unit back to Saigon, get them to the Huey while you can. I know I can't make it in one piece, I'm fragmentations of just one man. Please go men, please save yourselves, helping me will only get you killed. My rifle in my lap has a final mission, to me, my last bullet has been willed. |
