SOUND OFF

"SOUND OFF...ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR... 'I'm getting tough, so mean and lean' I'M GETTING TOUGH SO MEAN AND LEAN. 'An American made, fighting machine' AN AMERICAN MADE, FIGHTING MACHINE. 'From east to west and in between' FROM EAST TO WEST AND IN BETWEEN, 'A nation defending, proud gyrene' A NATION DEFENDING, PROUD GYRENE. 'The best our country's ever seen' THE BEST OUR COUNTRY'S EVER SEEN, 'An American made, U.S. Marine' AN AMERICAN MADE, U.S. Marine." 'One, two....three, four.....' I reflect back to those bootcamp days, wishing to return to that beginning phase, to the dreaded cadence of hated D.I.s, and early morning reviellies I'd despise, to their bellowed orders that would annoy, wish I could now defect, and leave Hanoi. 'One, two, three, four......' I'd love to leave this war forever more. One, two....three, four.

Additional Notes:
This poem could be best reviewed, as a reader pictured their favorite Gomer Pyle in the early morning dawn, running in cadence with their D.I. (drill instructor) much like Vince Carter barking his orders at them, as they each answer his song unison. Note: A 'gyrene' is a nickname Marines affectionalty called themselves.
