Catalyst

Lonely Lake has changed today. The ice is melting out slowly. Firs, long whipping in cold winter winds are swaying to gentler April breezes. Pale green tips decorate the branches of Blue Spruce, new shoots reflecting the growth in my heart. No longer shadowed by fear, I seem to see more clearly. By the path early crocus have given way to daffodils tips, thrusting up strongly. The rich dark earth smells of life, the very light seems to sparkle in the air and my skin feels warm and alive. I respond to the sun's caress as a lover will to lover's touch. You will not caulk the boat this year. Your fishing rods have been given out to deserving relatives, and I am content. How strange that you, a man so very cruel  should bring me springtime and new life   by simply joining with the earth.

Additional Notes:
Published in The River Reporter. The assignment: "Describe the landscape as seen by someone who has recently lost their husband or wife to Death. You may not use any form of the words Death, Husband or Wife." It took me one short story and two poems to arrive at this poem.
