It's For You

Once, there was reason enough, something that cut as clean as mercy  and forgiveness hones Once there was a pounding of two hearts, if not like surf at least like metronomes He makes you laugh at the absurdity of words you say,  but what once nourished you has now grown cold, the stage is bare but you are tethered to it with a cord that he cut while old midwives smiled Yours is the child most perfect and most rare who cannot bear what others in his classroom must You eat your breakfast bar and study Starbucks coffee grounds At night you lie on sheets your bodies do not warm and in the hall, the child plays Pokemon although he was forbidden it by you But still, you stay and say the reason is the child and Not the beach house or the fear  And when she calls at nine you are polite, hand him the phone, smile brightly, see your face reflected In your ring but not your finger turning blue And just inside, the fragile living bone
