EQUALITY

"Men are created equal," t'was once said.  Soldiers also, bleed the 'crimson red'. "In God We Trust" to Him we'd pray,  Arising from distant bunkers every day. If God is so great and He is so good,  Why not stop a war He claims He could? "An eye for an eye, or a tooth for a tooth,"  If God scorns war I reach for His truth. Instead combat deepens, 'On ye brave!'  No rush to glory, dashing to my grave. Why can't a lion lie down with the lamb?  Why no 'cease-fire' over Vietnam? But I look my enemy straight in his eyes.  If he looks away, it's me he'll despise. Then at close range another bullet flies.  On our day of reckoning, him or me dies. Why can't I shake hands with my enemy,  If it's so true God believes in equality? Like Christ, many soldiers pay the price,  With blood or lives, they too sacrifice. "In God We Trusted" to Him we prayed.  Men, just 'equal creations' to be slayed. "All men are equal," t'was once also said.  A 'body-count' number, in a pile of dead.

Additional Notes:
Enemy VC and friendly folks of South Vietnam appeared very much the same with no physical differences making it difficult to determine the enemy. Friendly allies would look straight into the eyes with sincerity, while VC would look away, eyes filled with deciet and then WATCH-OUT! This poem is not intended to 'slam' or a 'knock' at God or faith, just a question asking "WHY?" NO ONE POSSESSES THE ANSWERS OF WHAT HAPPENS IN OUR WORLD, NOT EVEN YOU OR YOU WOULD NOT BE SITTING HERE TODAY READING POETRY BECAUSE YOUR PRESENCE WOULD BE IN DEMAND SOLVING THOSE ISSUES!
