The Lady of the Night

The forest danced in carnival delight With leaves in clown’s regalia, Rustling mostly where she stepped  Promising to follow, as though This trail as old as gypsy Sensed the fire for entertainment That walked with my lady of the night. The outline of lingering icecapade Around the rocks in the mountain stream Added a seasonal debauchery To an already heady brew,  And we spoke of loves And my love of autumn As I walked with the lady of the night. Through the taverns and tenements I’d watched her glide with slow seductive smile, All those wild sarcastic eyes Of all the nymphs of my youth And with tongue on teeth assurance And parted urgent thighs I’d had to walk with this lady of the night. But now the hands of love Seemed pale and somehow bruised, And her careful tiny steps And half deliberate smile –  She cried as I wrapped her in my arms, And I walked the lady of the night Delicately into the day.
