THE HEAT

'The Heat' sweltered my burning face.   My blood ran freshly down my head. As the pain intensely reached my gut,   three soldiers laid over me, shot dead. Enemy soldiers 'The Heat' approached,   poking gunbarrels in each fixed eye. My wide stare locked on him knowing,   if I blinked I too would have to die. The Cong guerrillas stared a moment.   I found death in my own eyes scary. They took water, food, guns and ammo   pilering all the loot they could carry. Unable to move my heavy-dead blankets,   I hid under them where I prayed. For two sunsets I watched motionless.   Thankful for two daybreaks I'd made. The third day the sun shone bright,   high standing along about noon.... I heard soldiers encroach toward me,   I prayed it was my returning platoon. I laid silent, still and stiff again,   but stared death once more in the face. This band of 'gooks' gagged, choking   on the smell of death and disgrace. I stared as they run, but into a welcome.   I felt warm as I watched 'The Heat' fall. Saved by 'body counters' plus three bodies,   I'd battled to survive this war after all.

Additional Notes:
The enemy was often referred to as 'The Heat', 'The Cong', 'The guerrillas', 'The VC', 'The Man', and 'The Gooks' (plus many other not mentioned). 'Gooks' used in this text are not meant as an 'unpolitical correct term' these days and not meant to be demeaning in anyway. It is only used as a matter-of-fact point of the actual scene. (Please "EXCUSE ME", if anyone is offended by it!) The 'body counters' are those usually voluntering to go back to gather and of course count the casualties.
