First Spring Poetry Reading

The cardigan felt heavy, smothering under the unseasonably warm sun. My eyes squinted, overwhelmed by the sharp light. Lack of sleep and nourishment caused a buzzing in my head and a roar of protest from my gut I stood in affirmation, in public, words of protest, words of injustice, voices for those without voices in strong belief of unmasking prejudice Words prepared in anticipation, practiced in a solitary room, exposed to strangers ears, echoed in an Elks lodge on a Sunday afternoon, Stained with the sweat of perspiration They lie in a closed notebook, forgotten in the anxious pursuit of nourishment, rest and the inevitable sigh of relief In silence I wondered if this was how the oppressed lost the will to be heard
