A Soldier's Ballad

These days it’s hard, sometimes too hard for words to escape these cracked lips. Time doesn’t know how to say it’s sorry & still I don’t let go. Because for many nights I’ve spilt my blood onto paper speaking openly of summer nights of passion beautiful women and an unfettered primal lust. The past. All the past. When really the pen yearns to speak of a restless reality. Ahhh....welcome to my lounge for the night, for just one night we’ll talk freely of boozing, lusting, and our old friends Jim Beam and Mr. Scotch.  I used to think I’d never write this song but that was back when will power was more than just an ideal. I feel as though the walls are closing in on me I’m embracing a flickering memory and waking next to Jose Cuervo. Nonchalant realities and a biting cynicism.... She lies unclothed beside me her body a bandage, mine the wound. Her mouth, sweet and moist is as deadly as it is comforting.... I sigh, as if realizing for the first time that a lonely man finds drunkenness much slower than a content man out for thrills with his friends.  As if your body refuses the alcohol as a solace.... She’s like a jukebox that only carries sad country songs and I’m the bum who only wants to hear C-23. They say that Juliet was born into tragedy his sickness only cured by love ....that which evaded him mostly, so he spends his nights laying down with every cheap thrill he sees.... “The light at the end of the tunnel has been cancelled, due to lack of funding from love sick drunks....” No, I don’t believe I’ll be coming home any time soon, I’m too busy elaborating I feel as though I’ve got to move.... More and more into this everlasting dream, on and on into this self-imposed abyss. I’m embracing the flame of a drunken eternity I’m making apologies that don’t count I’m loving someone more drunken than myself when will I return to the water? Welcome to a history of whole-hearted apologies, decrepit poetry and a collection of rancid love songs gathering dust in the stagnant air of a smoky pool hall memory. I should have known better than to find myself in the eternity of a make-believe bliss.  With a growing collection of carnal knowledge gathered in pieces of rumpled yellow paper a pencil, and a few nickels to gamble with. The world is a good fucking friend of mine.  I suppose that a high paid psychotherapist would say that it all boils down to a woman who jumped out of my cauldron taking the one and only ladle with her. Allow me to laugh nervously with an air of false cockiness as I contemplate this anticipated remark while I nonchalantly blow my nose.  Didn’t anybody ever tell me, it’s not who’s right or wrong?  I once believed  in everything they had to say, even considered the notion that pretty boys like me could never be cliche.  I drowned myself in a passion pool every night and every waking moment, figuring that an act from the heart could never really be all that wrong. I feel as though my story is an entertaining one,  that I have a family who loves me, nightly passions at the blink of an eye, but my soul is empty still.  Is it the price to pay to be a ladies man? Or is Mr. Cohen wrong, and are my feet still stuck in the sand?  At night I reign king of my domain, with a hakuna matatta attitude, but in the morning I’ll kick the strange girl out of my bed..... thus leaving myself with a remorseful hangover, a mixture of perfumed and smoky air to breathe, the CD player still repeating the same sexy R&B song, and an empty heart. I could have lied, I often have trouble with the truth, but still I find myself writing these words with a blatant honesty. I’ve spent most of my life falling from grace.... It must have been that look in her eyes that of moonlight burning shadows into the setting sun, sweet kisses goodnight under a starlit sky. Her love was poison ivy, fit to bleed if only privileged to touch to gain trust and hope of long sought love, I’ll lick my lips and kiss the air and once more I’ll be swearing that I’m nobody’s fool. Her lives are something that I have yet to understand because she’s not not one woman, she’s many. And my life in this is something I’ve grown to accept as a reality still I find myself digging a shallow grave deeper each day.  How do you choose a path to follow when all directions are the road less traveled? I’ve seen the world through glassy eyes telling my sob stories to all ears from America to Europe and back again.  One woman said that it must be my Irish bloodline .....because the Irish are incapable of telling happy stories So I told one happy one as though to prove that shamrocks & shenanigans  aren’t all that I’m about.  But I had to think to myself that it was the only happy story of me that I knew. I guess that in itself is a sob story.  ....but still I continue to go out and create sad futures for a belittled past. As though I really do want something to hang on to, something whole, in a sublime way. Because with this pen, at times I feel like another starry eyed messiah about to meet his violent farewell as Don Henley says, I’ll never “learn to be still....” You see, throughout all of my days Toying with the hearts of others and forsaking those close to me There was a burning A burning that never ceased And that burning was the ache within my own chest The ache that comes with the needing of a one, true and only love. I’ve done my research on hopes and dreams and pretty places in the sky I reached across the great divide to find the one I couldn’t wait to hold and love and cherish her but what I found was a dying cigarette burning itself out in a pretty pink ashtray beside another Dear John letter, beside itself with hurtful words, paper that was pregnant with empathy. A justification of a forbidden destiny another wound between my shoulder blades. So I’ve gone and given my heart away for nothing again.... I’ve been treated as a child, babysat and pampered with high hopes on my shoulders I’m belittled by expectations of glory. And as I polish off a bottle of Beam, the bourbon produces bittersweet memories of a time where I pondered nothing I gave my heart with open arms and through it all what have I become? A pretty boy, lonely as the highway loveforsaken, belittled vagabond, nomad, hidden by misunderstanding, contagious fool by “higher” standards thrust into the role of the modern day ladies man. Blessed with good looks and sincere charm my assets are my curse. I look to every woman for a messiah and only find apathetic eyes. And still the ballad of Juliet continues on a lost and forsaken song amidst a fool’s demise. So I sit back with feet up and think aloud for no one to hear as I realize that my life has been not but one long night with a few comatose daylit hours....

Additional Notes:
As a soldier stationed in Germany in 1997, I was given the nickname "Juliet" because of the first letter of my name (Jason). Since I went by "J.R." in those days, and the military phonetic letter for "J" is Juliet, that's what I was called for a short time. Just happened to be during the 6 months it took me to write this piece.
