Empty Hands

To walk in empty hand is To never know the way. And though I find my Self alone, To walk beside a taller guide (a brother’s keeper be), To idolize and adulate With idle eyes that see: A path behind that’s walked alone, And miles more to go, How could I grow, How could I’ve grown. If I’d only known which way to go. There’s much to be said of a man who’s fed On bread of rich individuality. But the heart still knows that without high sights,  – where is he when I look up? – Strong just as a single tree it solid grows, And in soil rooted, just as equally, in solidarity.

Additional Notes:
I did mean for the 3rd line to read as it does. It is meant to be taken either as it is literally written or as it sounds. Both are in fact appropriate and equally intended. Also, I meant to end line 11 with a period. Line 12 is meant to sound like a continuation of line 11 and be an independent thought (an almost regretful one) and once again, both are appropriate. If you have comments on these two things, whether I succeeded in getting both thoughts across in each or failed, please let me know. For clarification, this poem is not meant to sound romantic in anyway. I can see how it might be misconstrued as such, but I hope I didn't fail in conveying it's real theme. I posted a poem I wrote after this one that is fairly similar in theme called "I'll Never Know". If you do grasp it and think you have suggestions that could help me make it better please let me know. I don't care for thumbs-up or thumbs-down critiques, but I greatly value and honestly appreciate critiques that seek to help me learn to be a better poet and to improve my work. Regardless, thanks for even taking the time to read this :-)
