Nursing Mindy Back to Health

Steam rose from my hand as I brought you hot coffee. Your legs had ached from standing in the cold drafts of the roughwood stall, still you yanked her halter when even her sleek mane hung heavy, she wanted to buckle and fall to excrutiating fate. She knew only of the pain in struggling to stand... to stay alive.        The sparkle in your amber eyes        was dulled by a desperate longing        as you comforted the spirited mare,        the same wild nag you had cursed        for throwing you to a hard thump        on solid ground. You had walked her for hours, never losing stride; a sad parade of wounded pride in subtle light of the crisp early morn, you gallantly led her 'til there was evidence  danger had passed.        Her chestnut coat shone in the daylight.        She kicked the air        as if a heavy burden had been lifted.        Your eyes, dull from worry        in the long sleepless night,        lit up with joy and relief,        so immersed in pride and victory        it seemed you and she were one        in equestrian beauty.
