Horses

We picked our way back behind the house, an unkempt, lonely plot. Wild grasses engulfing, nearly obliterating a solitary 'For Sale' sign. Continuing through a broken gate across a little bridge, discovering two horses, unshod standing amid islands of skunk cabbage. They both raised heads to view the strangers. The mare, tall in front, spare a good jumper in her day but old, arthritic now, stepping forward to greet with honest curiosity, even relishing our cautious stroking; our hands caressing her soft chestnut nose replete with fine white blaze. Gentle, kind. The second, a stallion once, statley, and wise in the ways of men looked, saw us for the sightseers we were, and went back to cribbing at the fence. There would be no carrot, no bit of hay from us. He'd seen our kind before. Just passing through. Strollers with empty pockets, unwilling to give an old man his due. Back to important business making splinters of an old wooden rail.
