Voices In The Woods

The children's voices in the afternoon destroyed my hopes of sleeping, but I dozed just waiting through the heat of that dry June enjoying squeals and shouts, though no repose. A cry of fear knifed through my ease, the scream brought me upright in bed, caught breath and held me prisoner to my ears while worries reamed my mind in legions, all composure felled. Undone, I waited, thrall to fear's old chains: Was this a real scene, or had madness won, gaining thus a foothold in my brain and finishing what it had once begun? I silent sat, held prisoner by my past unable to respond, nor even ask.
