Regret

On a late winter evening a chill hung heavy in the air, colder than the icy drafts. Flashing red lights reflected shadows of spindly, lifeless limbs. I refused to comprehend the connection between the strange void and the lights piercing the depths of December darkness. Officer Snowe asked the ominous question as he stood in eerie authority at our front door, "Where are your parents?". His unfaltering, stern composure seemed to waiver as he asked my age. "Fourteen" I remembered the silence between us that morning, the uncomfortable limbo as we awaited the bus in the foggy mist of dawn. I longed for some connection, a word of understanding, destined to float forever in a cloud of regret.
