A day at the beach

The fall sun warms me, and I turn toward that warmth to take advantage of its steady, healing rays. I watch the uninterupted ebb and flow of the tide, as it caresses the rocks and sand, and laps playfully at my feet. Children run and play, in and out of the water;  shrieking and laughing with total, carefree abandon. Fishermen parallel the shore in small boats, and their voices carry across the surf as they speak in tones loud enough to be heard above their whining engines. Men and women walk the sandy shore in thongs; canvas shoes; and sometimes barefooted,  so as to feel the warm, wet sand squishing between their tender toes. Gulls and other sea birds wing by with their incessant screeching, while continuing their never-ending search for bits of nourishment. A sea plane lumbers overhead; getting louder for a time, and then growing fainter and fainter as its distance from my vantage increases. A large boat, perhaps a shrimper, rumbles past and the thump, thump, thump of its diesel engine echoes across the waves - fueling my imagination as to its destination. All the pictures and sounds blend together in a homogeneous mix of beauty and joy - found in this small radius of my world.         Being blind from birth has not affected my exultation;         and the pictures that I paint in my mind          are surely as beautiful as those with sight can see.

Additional Notes:
I am not blind, but if I were, I would hope that I might 'see' like this subject. (This my first attempt at 'free verse' and I look forward to your comments.)
