Pepper

When the loneliness consumed me, you were there. When I awoke to find myself alone, you were there. When I despaired & spoke harsh words, you were there. When I complained because you were so needy & a bother, you never deserted me, looking for another. Every day you bestowed unconditional love, asking nothing from me but me. When I ran from room to room, screaming, screaming his name you were beside me step for step. When I fell to my knees cuddling you in my arms, you sensed my horror. When I told you he was gone, never to return you were there. Now I cradle & clutch you to my heart as you labor to breath. Don't die "Peppy" my little fury friend, don't you leave me too.
