September

Raging hues of fiery red, gold swept across the blanket of pine. Fluttering of distant wings, jet black, skeletal in an aquamarine sky. Musky aroma of worn leather, fresh baled hay in a leaning barn. Sun bleached planks standing in defiance in the shadow of approaching dusk, cool gust warns of impending changes. In the rustling of leaves I heard the muffled sound of children as waves pounded a rocky wall, echoing in an alcove of seasons passing. Damp beach towels, soggy sandwiches, empty soda cans, prized collection of dried starfish and discarded shells, lonely, waning shrieks of a sea gull recalling a fading memory. The red haired girl has grown tall, seeking her dreams in independence, far from the sand castles, washed away in the oblivious ebbing tide. A magenta horizon mirrors the flaming orange of flowing locks. Silvery hues reflected in a pool. Lines appear on weathered faces. An aging hero fades into dusk.
