Cape Cod Pines

Cape Cod pines line the highway to Provincetown, scrubby green porcupines that hunker low, needles touching, drawing strength from each other. They stand, a silent militia  with trunks bent backward, braced against fickle winds, asking an eternal question. Brave barrier between land and sea. Beyond this misshapen army lie shifting dunes, sea bottoms waiting to sink beneath frothy brine. You spiny pines, enlisted to preserve a fragile peninsula against ravaging seas stay rooted for me.
