Chores

The chores of early youth define our lives As strong young trees are roughly weather shaped And strengthened by adversity, survives The chores of early youth, defines our lives  Grown independent we are free to strive Our outer ways reflect a fine inscape. The chores of early youth defines our lives As strong young trees are roughly weather shaped. chilly Maine mornings black iron stove needing wood  guard geese patrolling Barn sanctuary fifty grueling feet away paired snow-white geese watch  Desperate dash to red barn Angry honkings follow me. fat load  arms full of wood fear runs my stumbling feet towards the waiting house and stove  at speed. too late the geese attack sharp nips at chubby legs wood spills down. I am in trouble  again. Fear strikes me witless as I turn I never learn to bear the pain I run in vain. As angry peckings flail my calves there is no salve to soothe the mind    nor safety find the door is fifty feet away.  So day by day I faced the geese In time found peace. The chores of early youth define our lives as strong young trees are roughly weather shaped.
