Dryads

I was born        when droplets of water converged.  The water   formed the essence of my soul,        gathering around it the earth   that formed my flesh.  My soul,        at the moment of creation, was bound,   condemned forever to answer the fate of the tree.        The towering oak that sheltered my childhood, split,   half-rotten from lightning scars,        waits for the storm that will finally fell it.   And I,...               I am a dryad fearing the death of a tree. I fear:      the destruction of my temple   caused by the slow inside out rotting of the tree;      the tearing of my heart   by the rending of the trunk as it falls;      the death of my god   amidst the wreckage of the tree. I fear:      the explosion of the tree in the wind;      the long empty days of godlessness;      the rebuilding...                 the rebuilding bereft of the bondage, and       of the fear and of the tree. I fear:      the reconstitution of the soul,      the long stretch of time towards eternity,      and, the impressions of tree roots upon the earth.

Additional Notes:
Dryads, in celtic mythology dryads are small female humanoid creatures that worship trees. There are alternate spellings and even a myth in which dryads are male.
