The Day After

Mothers, fathers, husbands, wives Sisters, brothers, daughters, sons Friends and lovers… Watching The search for their loved ones Standing on the streets. Holding pictures, holding hope Waiting for a miracle As a nation tries to cope Rubble from twin brothers And two birds that used to fly Coat the streets and buildings Near twisted ruins, piled high One bird is embedded Near the eagle’s heart Blood mingles with the tears Flowing from the dart Another bird lays desolate Strewn in a field A monument to hero’s Who refused to yield  Angels search the vestiges For the loved one’s lost Millions cry for justice Someone must pay the cost And through it all, the weeping Tears fall from sea to sea As more of the lost are known Prayers are whispered fervently From across the world Come letters, cards and aid As the dead in makeshift morgues Solemnly are laid How many souls are missing? We wonder… as each day’s done Too many for man to number But, God knows every one.
