We Chose To Serve

As the American Flag is unfurled by a gentle breeze My mind's eye drifts back in time To see women reloading cannons of their fallen husbands, Caring for the injured, flying cargo planes full of supplies, Giving comfort to the dying in make-shift field hospitals, Training to be astronauts, driving trucks across the desert sands. Viet Nam was slowly winding down,I decided to join the ranks.  Was told women of character did not join the military. Remembering the women who blazed the trail, I knew this could not be true. With tears welling up in my eyes, a lump in my throat I took the oath. Proud to wear the uniform so many had donned before me. Women were now making their dreams reality. New challenges were opening up. Many were surprised at the successes, quick to jump on failure. Women have consistently made a quiet difference, although mostly just tolerated, Women showed great strength of character and courage during their tours of duty. Women have survived combat, prisoner of war trials, yet they still debate. Love of country, striving to make a difference,  Determined to protect, we are soldiers. Thank you God for a nation where we can make a choice. Thank you God for the women who chose to serve.
