Man on the Mountain

Each set of footprints has a story, and every person has one, which someone is longing to hear. I look back into the moist, dew stricken grass, and study the footprints that are only beginning to form. Where have these footprints been? Have they been down in the valleys  or have they been walking upon the mountain? Some walk over bridges, and some over my heart, but they’re all going in the same direction. Headed for that final destination, they can call home for the rest of eternity. I walk upon the mountain, smelling the morning sunrise, as I look into an empty grave. Many great men have left this Earth, and were put to rest on the top of this mountain. I stand on top of the mountain, with arms poised in the upright position as I prepare for the flight home. I’ll never be lost, but I’ll be gone, and hopefully never forgotten. My memories will live on, as will my dreams. For I am the new man on the mountain.

Additional Notes:
I wrote this poem as an assignment for school. I liked it so much, I told my parents that if I were to die before them, to read this at my funeral. I know I shouldn't think like that, but now adays, you just have to be ready, and this was my way. I hope you enjoy.
