Ferry Tale

Stressed terminal doors groan open, Releasing regurgitated passengers, The boat's maw stretched wide, Sucking in man and machine alike. Hundreds of buzzing conversations, Muffled by diesel drinking engines, Big Apple spires and glassy towers shrink, A bridge to be bought in the distance. Lady Liberty poses for disposable cameras, Ellis Island somber with memories of old, Cell phones tweet and pagers chirp, Palm pilots juggled and laptops balanced. Suits wrestling with The New York Times, Jeans scanning The Post and Daily News, Big hairs chewing and snapping gum, Summer dresses doing their nails. A preacher as shiny as a new Cadillac, Our Shoeshine man and his dirty pillow, A walking mini-mall selling batteries, Blue men with Glocks keeping watch.  The boat bellowed like a wounded whale, The engines gurgled and gently died, Momentum softly pushed us into the slip, Where another meal awaited the ferry.
